About Us  |  Our History

The Communication Workers Friendly Society Limited (CWFS) was founded in 1895 by the Postman's Federation to provide assistance to its members during illness or when losing a loved one.

Mutuals are non-profit making organisations, any surplus they make is returned to their members. Mutual organisations exist for the benefit of their members and for the purpose of trying to improve their members' lives. Friendly Societies, which are mutual organisations, were originally formed to help poorer people save for funeral expenses.

With the introduction of the 1992 Friendly Society Act and changes to financial regulations, CWFS became an independent organisation which operates separately from the CWU and is responsible for its own decision-making. However, although CWFS is no longer part of the CWU, it continues to maintain a close relationship with the union.

Many of our Financial Advisers come from the communications industry and therefore fully understand the needs of our customers. Our headquarters are based in Wimbledon, South West London.

At the end of 2008 CWFS had more than 29,000 members and total assets worth over £105 million.

The Society is a member of the Association of Financial Mutuals (website: www.afs.org.uk)
